There is no Training for this…

We have been blessed to be trained in both the scriptures and to also have missiological training, we have heard endless teachings and things on “what to expect” while in the tribe, but as for most things, life is the only teacher.

You think a missionary just learns language and teaches bible? We wish that is all we did this past 5 days…

-Cry with a pastor that we are training, because his dad died

-Help with the logistics of the burial

-Preach at the funeral

-Be a transport driver for people and materials

-Support (financially and food-wise) the many meals that have to be hosted for the next 10 days (their cultural way of mourning after a death)

-Make a casket

-Console the family

-Challenge the witch doctor’s teachings to both him and the people hearing him

-Encourage the pastor daily

-and much more…

Building the coffin

Building the coffin

No training in this world prepares you for how to deal with death… no preparations explain how to balance getting involved and loving on families during this event. Our people group has a 5-day and a 10-day ceremony/mourning process, and then after that they arise and go walk the foot trails to think about where he has walked one last time. They also have a 100-day ceremony (they call it that, but it really depends on when their gardens are ready, most of their produce takes 3 months to grow, 90+ days). And then the mourning process is officially finished.

Weeping and wailing...

Weeping and wailing…

It has been an amazing time to see how the training we have given these people has been manifesting itself in their lives, to see how they harmonize following the truths of the Bible and still engaging in their culture, it has been great to see firsthand. The pastor has actually been sharing a verse here and there with the family that is staying together; the immediately family along with those who helped bury the body all have to sleep in one house for 10 days during this process. It has been good, because it is an opportunity for people in the village to see how you can be both a Christian and a person who speaks Tiale. The 10-day event finishes on our Sunday here in Vanuatu, continue to pray that the pastor stands strong in his beliefs, and is an example to those who are around him, all eyes are on him, people are waiting to see how he reacts to each traditional belief.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Years from Tiale Land!

So what is your tradition for New Years?

In Tiale Land, each village takes a turn from the week of Christmas through New Years hosting the “New Years event”. Kids, youth, and adults gather together as they sing any 2 songs that they choose… but what’s the twist?

1. YOU HAVE TO GIVE THEM FOOD…

2. They have to sing songs to you at your house…

3. You can put WHATEVER you want all over them!

-Traditionally they used to use over-ripe to borderline fermented fruit such as bananas or papaya… then they added used cooking oil… now, anything goes! They love putting paint in bottles and squirting it at you… it does NOT come off! Clothes get ruined, you are dirty beyond a simple shower, and there are non-stop laughs and smiles as you participate. We might have added some things into our mix like: cement… hot sauce… etc. And they relished at the opportunity to get back at us.

All that to say… Happy New Years from the Stokes in Tiale Land to you all! We appreciate you all back home. God bless!

Merry Christmas 2018!

MERRY CHRISTMAS from our family to yours, from Vanuatu.

Those of you who are blessed to have the privilege of being near family and enjoying them, do not miss out on that opportunity.

All excuses are inconsequential in light of eternity and the the brevity of life on this earth.

When in heaven, you won’t regret not getting an iPhone, you’ll regret not loving those in your sphere where God has strategically and purposefully placed you.

Love as if it were you last Christmas together… for EVERY missionary on the field, this 5 week stretch of holidays is hardest on them emotionally being isolated and away from family.

Merry Christmas! We love you all! It’s our privilege to be your feet to the Tiale People.

PS do not forget about the families of those who are overseas. This time is hard on them as well.

It’s a white Christmas after all!

We are well into the rainy season, with temperatures going well into the 110’s every day for the past two weeks, one day we clocked it at 115F, and humidity going into the high 80’s, how could we possibly have a white Christmas? Well, we defrosted our freezer and scraped the ice off its walls and had a snowball-fight with some of the local kids.

Snow-ball fight!

Many of them had never held ice before, we taught them that where we grew up, this falls on the ground for month’s at a time and then we hurl them at each other in a ball-shape and call it a snow-ball fight. They stood amazed and confused at this concept; because all they know is hot, more hot, and rain. It was a fun and yet short-lived event… until the next defrosting!

Happy (belated) Thanksgiving to you all (yinz), we had a somewhat “American-style” thanksgiving with about 30+ Americans from various organizations in town this year, it was a nice change of pace since we are far from our families. As we reflected upon this holiday season, we realized nothing can substitute or lessen the pain from being with family (Matt. 19:29) during the holidays or hard times… nothing. Only acknowledging our mission helps, which “transforms” our minds and compels us to think of other things, and remember the Reason for being here.

We had a great time with Nicole’s family being here, we were able to get a lot of projects done on the Bible school property, beauty-up our house a tad bit, and make some good memories as we took a break together for about a week; that helped refresh us and get ourselves ready for this next 6-month haul of being isolated in the village during the rainy season, with cyclones and flooding rivers which can come at a moments notice…

Enjoying family!

Another recent highlight was that our home church sent our Pastor, Deacon, and another friend along to visit us and encourage us! Seth got the privilege to co-teach with our pastor and translate for him as we taught many leaders about prayer; this truly was an amazing time! Especially since they had to hike and swim to get to us because the rivers were flooded!

We got a lot of remodeling done thanks especially to Nicole’s father! He and Seth worked a lot together and remodeled 3 dorms for married couples, and built a brand new dorm, with new bunk beds.

New bunk beds!

Brand new boys dorm!

A lot of work has been accomplished and there is already buzz circulating about the Bible School and many new prospective students are expressing interest in coming… we will have to wait until May 7th to see who shows up!

Pray that God brings the right group for this first year… Please continue to pray for the 4 men who are currently training to be Pastors. They are all back in their villages with their families. Two of the men live on another island, so Seth plans to write and call them on a weekly basis to encourage them, and the other two men live nearby and we will see them regularly. Continue to pray for their growth and maturation, the world, Satan, and the flesh do NOT want them to succeed.

Urgent-Please Pray!!! Take #3

Hi everyone, this is mainly for those of you who are not on Facebook or might not have seen Seth’s post yesterday. Seth and the guys have attempted two separate times (two days) to cross the river but the rivers have been too big to be able to cross either with the truck or even swimming. Thankfully yesterday afternoon and last night the skies were clear. We are praying for today that they will be able to cross. They are taking life vests, tubes, and ropes to help them cross.

Building Update

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to give you all a quick update on how things are going here on the building projects. It has been such a blessing to have Nicole’s parents here with us. Russ, Nicole’s dad, has been doing little jobs around our house during his “free time”. Everything has been going really well, despite the rain almost every afternoon. The brand new boys dorm has been finished and is already furnished with 6 new bunk beds. Every step of the projects has given lots of opportunities for the pastors in training to learn how to build. The next project is to work on the three dorms for married couples. Will share more later. Stay tuned for more photos!

As always,

Your feet here in Vanuatu,

Seth & Nicole Stokes

Projects, Pastors, and Personnel

As we write this update to you all, we are currently underway in building the next facility at Big Bay Bible College. Thank you to all who gave! We received about 50% of the funds to complete the construction of the new dorms (facilities, beds, etc.). We know God is faithful and will take care of the mission He has given us, witnessing to the Tiale people here in Vanuatu, along with reaching into other language groups and even other islands!

Sundays=Hiking to nearby villages for church

Lord willing, by the end of this week the new dorm will be erected and remodelling will be underway with the other facilities. Of course language studies and discipleship have no end, whether it is helping with community projects, hosting teams, individuals, facing flooded rivers that have changed our plans several times, our ministry(s) are always progressing.

The new dorm building is underway!

The new dorm building is underway!

Culture always comes at us, more and more each day we see ourselves understanding their worldview better and learning more as to why they do what they do, and also what is important to them. They always says things like, “we have tricked other people, but you have learned us well… other people don’t know how we think, but we can’t hide things from you”. It is always encouraging to be viewed as an “insider”. Living here day in and day out, we get to see who people really are. It is always a blessing to learn some new insights about the people here and to see them grow in little ways in their faith, we guess that is why God gave us a promise as laborers we will get to enjoy the fruit firsthand (2 Tim. 2:6).

Nicole's "older brother"

Nicole’s “older brother”

The pastors in training are always growing, which is exciting! We just finished 1 Corinthians this past week and one of them said, “I want to tell God thank you for His word… I didn’t know what real love was until I read and studied 1 Corinthians 13”. Seth is always emphasizing spiritual maturity with the men as they study God’s Word. This is what one of the young men said regarding the Great Commission, “You have to have a father before you have a child, kid’s do not come first… too many people focus on having unwanted children, but not many try to make dads… that is the problem here in Vanuatu, too many children and no fathers”. God called us to make mature Christians not to just get them saved and leave them like an unwanted child. This is why we wanted to live among the people here and invest in the vision that God gave us.

Working in the garden

Working in the garden

Seth still meets with the Pastors often, mainly trying to focus on life-on-life discipleship with them, building relationships, and speaking into their lives as God ordains. Continue to pray for them, God is growing and stretching each one according to their own struggles.

Working on a kitchen = life-on-life discipleship

Working on a kitchen = life-on-life discipleship

Because of how the outreaches and preaching roster were constructed this year; we received feedback: “If it wasn’t for this calendar to keep us faithful, we would have lost one of our villages this year to a false religion… if it wasn’t for this calendar I would not have been faithful to any other place, I would not have encouraged those who needed it and would have neglected them just like I have for years… this calendar helps me pray for other villages… if it wasn’t for this calendar some of these villages would have pursued other religions… because of this calendar it kept me honest because I had accountability… now I choose when I go and do evangelism to villages that need it, before I only did it when other people told me to go, but now I mark the calendar and I choose for myself the villages to go to, before this calendar I always said I would go”… (As he smiled and said, “which was never”). Many things we do here impact deeper than we ever realize, this is an example of just one small thing the Lord led us to do to help keep things organized and hopefully expand our reach amongst the Tiale people.

Visiting a nearby village

Visiting a nearby village

Our home church is sending two members from our church to do a survey trip. One of which is our pastor and the other is a church member that Seth has known for almost 20 years. This will be an exciting (but very short) time! They will only be with us for less than 3 days, the other 3 days they will be in town with our co-workers’ ministry.

Mom and Dad Arrived!

Mom and Dad Arrived!

Nicole’s parents got the full experience! They arrived here, got off the plane… and then we began the trek of the 3-hour drive to get to our village. It had rained that day so we had to wait for about an hour for the water to go down… Seth had to hike to a nearby village and ask a few men to assist by giving us weight in the back of the truck so we did not get swept away by the river. Just a normal day in the place we live… this is the sixth time we have had to stop at the river and wait for it to go down… and we know this will happen many more times. Nicole’s parents were impressed with what it takes to just get to “our home”. They have integrated well, they are getting over jet lag, and have worked every day already. Russ and Seth are doing odd jobs around the house to finish it off before cyclone season, and Nicole and her mom work around the house, getting things cleaned well before the humidity comes again and encrusts everything with mold.

Thank you for your faithfulness in following us in our ministry! We apologize for the delay in this update!

Your feet to the Tiale people. Seth and Nicole Stokes.
